Trackit

See where your money goes, at a glance

Trackit home and spending insights screens on iPhone

Trackit is a free personal spending tracker that I built and published on the App Store. It keeps all your spending in one place, from groceries to rent, from your electricity bill to your Netflix subscription, from a loan instalment to a coffee at a café.

Why I built it

When inflation is high, two things are especially hard to keep track of: how much your recurring payments add up to each month, and how much they've gone up over time. I tried plenty of apps, but I couldn't find one that was truly free: most hid key features behind a paywall or filled the screen with ads, and I got tired of it. So I decided to build my own: completely free, with no ads, no account, and none of your data ever leaving your phone.

What it does

Fast expense entry
You log a purchase in three taps: amount, category, save.
Recurring payments
Add rent, service charges, bills and subscriptions once. When a payment day arrives, the app records the payment itself, and it reminds you before the day comes.
Instalment tracking
Enter the total amount and the number of instalments. The app works out how many you've paid, how many are left and when the plan ends.
Bills that vary
For bills like electricity or gas that change every month, you enter the real amount when the bill arrives. The app never makes up an estimate.
Insights and payment history
One chart shows how your money is split across categories. You can also look back by day, week or month to see what you paid for.
Calendar
Days with spending get a dot, and recurring payment days are highlighted in colour. Tap a day to see everything that happened on it.
Two kinds of budget
Set a monthly limit for everyday spending only, or one that includes recurring payments. You get a warning as you get close to the limit.
Price-rise tracking
The app keeps a history of the amounts you enter, and a chart shows how much a payment has gone up over time.
Language & currency
Turkish and English interface, with support for multiple currencies.

Privacy isn't a feature, it's the foundation

Trackit has no server. There is no sign-up and no email address; all data is stored only on the phone. The app makes no network requests, and its App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected". To guard against data loss, users can export a backup file and restore it at any time. The app also has no business model: no ads, no premium tier, no locked features.

Under the hood

I built the app with React Native and Expo, in TypeScript. Data lives on the device in a SQLite database. Its schema grows from version to version through a migration system that never breaks existing user data. To avoid floating-point errors, money is always stored as whole numbers in the smallest currency unit. All the calculation logic is separated from the interface into testable functions and checked by hundreds of automated tests. Reminders use local notifications, so no server is needed.

Design

I designed the interface around a metro map. Every spending category is a line in its own colour, and upcoming payments are listed like a departure board on a station platform. The logo grows from the same idea: three coloured lines bending together.
